  • Donald A. (D. A.) Henderson, MD, director of the federal Office of Public Health Preparedness and leader of the successful global effort to eradicate smallpox, has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

  • Robert O. Bonow, MD, who is Goldberg Professor of Medicine at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, has been elected president of the American Heart Association. Augustus O. Grant, MD, PhD, codirector of the Heart Station at Duke University and professor of medicine at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC, is AHA president-elect.

  • Nelson B. Watts, MD, professor of medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Cincinnati, Ohio, and director of its Bone Health and Osteoporosis Center, has been elected president of the American College of Endocrinology.

  • Christine E. Seidman, MD, a professor in the departments of Medicine and Genetics at Harvard Medical School, a Howard Hughes Medical Investigator, and director of the Cardiovascular Genetics Service at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston, Mass, and Jonathan G. Seidman, PhD, the Henrietta B. and Frederick H. Bugher Professor of Cardiovascular Genetics at Harvard Medical School and also a Howard Hughes Medical Investigator, have received the Bristol-Myers Squibb Award for Distinguished Achievement in Cardiovascular Research.

  • Marwan G. Fakih, MD, has joined the Gastrointestinal Cancer Division at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, NY. At the same institution, Tracey L. O'Connor, MD, has joined the Breast Cancer Division.

  • Andrew P. Kant, MD, founder and president of KSF Orthopaedic Center, Houston, Tex, has been named president of the Texas Orthopaedic Association.

  • Julie Gerberding, MD, has been named director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, Ga. The first woman to head the CDC, she was promoted from the position of acting deputy director for science.
