  • Christine Cassel, MD, is the first woman to become dean of the Oregon Health Sciences University School of Medicine in Portland. An expert in geriatric medicine, medical ethics, and the quality of clinical care, Cassel was previously professor and chair of the Henry L. Schwartz Department of Geriatrics and Adult Development at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City and director of the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center at Bronx Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

  • Six surgeons have recently joined the staff of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Mass. They are: Douglas W. Hanto, MD, PhD, chief, Division of Transplantation; Frank G. Opelka, MD, chief of colon and rectal surgery and vice chair of finance, Department of Surgery; Per-Olof Hasselgren, MD, PhD, vice chair of research, Department of Surgery, and director of endocrine surgery; Larry M. Gentilello, MD, chief of trauma and surgical and critical care; Simon K. Ashiku, MD, surgeon in the thoracic division; and Kathy Golbarg Niknejad, MD, urological surgeon.

  • Margaret R. Spitz, MD, MPH, chair of the Department of Epidemiology at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Tex, has received the American Association for Cancer Research–American Cancer Society Award for Research Excellence in Epidemiology and Prevention from the Association.

  • Richard R. Barakat, MD, has been appointed chief of the Gynecology Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, NY. Also at the center, Arthur E. Brown, MD, has been appointed director of the Employee Health Service.
