Three scientists whose research has led to pivotal discoveries illuminating how the immune system functions have been honored as recipients of the 2009 Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research, the largest prize for medicine in the United States.
Sharing the award, which was presented on April 24, are Ralph Steinman, MD, of Rockefeller University in New York City; Charles Dinarello, MD, of the University of Colorado in Denver; and Bruce Beutler, MD, of the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif. Their insights are pointing to new therapeutic approaches for many diseases, from rheumatoid arthritis to AIDS to cancer.
