The 5-Minute Pediatric Consult is part of the 5-Minute Consult series and has been a mainstay in staffing rooms and reference libraries of pediatric teaching facilities since it was first published in 1996. The fifth edition has just been released and includes several updates that enhance its usefulness.
The organization has been fairly consistent since the first edition. The 5-Minute Pediatric Consult is designed to be used as a quick reference to assist with the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of children as they present to the emergency department, outpatient clinic, or inpatient floors. Schwartz and the associate editors have engaged general pediatricians and specialists from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia as well as from pediatric institutions from across the country and globally to share their expertise in a concise, structured, easy-to-follow format. The book is divided into 7 sections: “Chief Complaints and Specific Diseases,” “Syndromes Glossary,” “Cardiology Laboratory,” “Surgical Glossary,” “Normal Laboratory Values,” “Tables,” and “Medications.”
