Three physician freshmen will be joining 11 physician-incumbents in the House and Senate when the 111th Congress convenes in January.
The newcomers are Rolf “Parker” Griffith, MD (retired) (D, Ala), Bill Cassidy, MD (R, La), and David “Phil” Roe, MD (R, Tenn). This trio could be joined by John Fleming, MD (R, La) who faced a December 6 runoff election.
The reelected House incumbents are Vic Snyder, MD (D, Ark), Tom Price, MD (R, Ga), Paul Broun, MD (R, Ga), Phil Gingrey, MD (R, Ga), Charles Boustany, MD (R, La), former Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, MD (R, Tex), Michael Burgess, MD (R, Tex), Jim McDermott, MD (D, Wash), and Steve Kagen, MD (D, Wis). Rep David Weldon, MD (R, Fla) retired.
