After years of waiting, primary care physicians finally have updated lipid control and lifestyle guidelines for prevention and treatment strategies to combat cardiovascular disease risk factors.
The guidelines were released November 12 by the American College of Cardiology (ACC), the American Heart Association (AHA), and the Obesity Society. Two guidelines update previous guidance for managing blood cholesterol (http://bit.ly/1cTwyEY) and for spurring weight loss in overweight or obese individuals (http://bit.ly/17phxDc). In addition, 2 new guidelines were released, one offering recommendations for assessing cardiovascular risk in adults (http://bit.ly/1gQkk0C) and the other for developing healthy lifestyles (http://bit.ly/17uXmnm). Development of the guidelines proved more difficult than most individuals involved in the process had anticipated. Historically, the guidelines were created by expert panels convened by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and updated every few years.
