In Reply Mr Chhabra and Dr Gochfeld agree with our call for focusing attention on the emerging body of evidence, not on each individual study. This much-needed shift in focus is fraught with challenges, including partial and biased reporting and publication of research and the limitations of commonly used methods to summarize evidence (eg, systematic reviews with study-level meta-analyses, network meta-analyses).
A focus on the body of evidence will require advocating and promoting open data and full and complete study reports, collaboration across investigators in summarizing individual patient data (ie, designing prospective meta-analyses), and enhancing general literacy about evidence syntheses in the media and among users of research.
