I have often been asked, especially by medical students doing their first rotation in geriatrics, why I chose the field. It usually happens as they first begin to catch on, and they all seem a bit surprised by the revelation, that this specialty is actually a lot more attractive than they had expected. In fact, I have been asked and answered this question so many times that I even wrote a short piece entitled “Why Geriatrics?” which I hand out to those who query me.
Although I do list a whole bunch of “answers,” the truth is, and I can't seem to help it, I just seem to like old people. Of course, not all elderly folk are angels (yet!), and for the most part a young bastard usually turns into an old one. But still, even in those whom I would probably not have liked much in their younger years, most seem to have mellowed with age. Whatever, I just enjoy looking after these older people.
