To the Editor: Drs Moses and Dorsey1 suggested in their Viewpoint that biomedical researchers “must look to the private sector” to compensate for declining federal support. We believe that the limitations of private sector funding merit further consideration.
First, successful acquisition of funding from private sources does not guarantee that a researcher in the United States will remain in the country, where the downstream economic impact of biomedical laboratory activity can benefit local and regional communities.
