In Reply: Dr Clarke maintains that caution should be used before devoting additional resources to research in residency because research activities will impinge on residents' time to acquire clinical skills and the research produced may be of poor quality. Although I agree with Clarke that research is not for everyone and should not be mandatory in residency, there are nevertheless good reasons for many residents to conduct research. For those with the ability and interest, conducting research can enrich their engagement with evidence-based medicine, foster critical thinking, and contribute to life-long learning.
