A new federal rule designed to strengthen the privacy and security of patients' health information means that medical practices and hospitals will need to perform due diligence to ensure they are in compliance with the regulations.
The new rule, announced January 17 by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), combines modifications to the 1996 Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the 2009 Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act, and the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008.
