Robert Burns' evocative “My Heart's in the Highlands” may epitomize the power of mountains to refresh and lift one's spirits. Mountains have played a role in physical healing as well, exemplified by sanatoriums in Switzerland in the early 1900s. Mountain air was thought to be medically beneficial, especially for lung ailments. For Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938), it was in the Swiss Alps where he ultimately found the healing sorely needed after physical and mental deterioration experienced during military service. The Alps' calming and restorative effect seems evident in the lyrical lines shaping peaceful scenes in Mountain Landscape From Clavadel (cover).
