An updated guideline for the diagnosis and management of stable known or suspected ischemic heart disease, jointly created by several medical organizations, is placing a new focus on patient-centered care. But some experts question whether the guideline can actually direct such focused care.
Ischemic heart disease remains the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. It is estimated that 1 in 3 US adults has some form of cardiovascular disease, including more than 17 million with coronary heart disease and almost 10 million with angina pectoris or chest pain, the most common symptom of ischemic heart disease.
