Stomach Cancer in Iceland

ABSTRACT

To the Editor:—  In the Nov. 25, 1961, issue of The Journal (178:789), there appeared an interesting article by Dr. Niels Dungal on the prevalence of stomach cancer in Iceland, where the distribution of stomach cancer is correlated with the consumption of smoked fish.After observing the prevalence of stomach cancer in areas where the smoking of food, as a method of preservation, is customary, one may wonder whether the steady decline in the incidence of stomach cancer in the United States, during this century, has not been due to a gradual change in the customary method of preserving fish and meat, from smoking to refrigeration.
