Bradley’s Neurology in Clinical Practice

Bradley's Neurology in Clinical Practice is a monumental and acknowledged “classic” textbook of more than 2000 pages that has survived and indeed thrived for more than 20 years through 6 editions. Founding editor Walter G. Bradley has masterfully and succinctly summarized the history of this undertaking in his foreword to this sixth edition. The 2-volume format has been maintained, and the number of chapters has remained essentially constant, from 84 in 1991 to the current 82. The weight of the volumes has actually decreased from 16 pounds to about 14.5, despite a modest increase in pages of text from 1941 to 2162 and pages of index from 88 to 159. Robert B. Daroff and Gerald M. Fenichel have remained as founding editors. Joseph Jankovic replaced C. David Marsden for the fourth edition in 2004 after the latter's tragically premature death, and John C. Mazziotta has now become the newest editor with Bradley's decision to step down. The list of 182 authors reads like a Who's Who of neurology, as might be anticipated. Illustrative videos have been available online since 2000, and the type and quality of images gracing the text has dramatically improved since 1991. I have been particularly impressed by the design and usefulness of tables and figures throughout the text—a tribute to the contributors, the editors, and, of course, the publisher. One particularly enjoyable table, “Named Cranial Nerve Syndromes,” would satisfy the most avid eponym enthusiast.
