New Definition of Myocardial Infarction Puts Biomarkers Front and Center

Development of highly sensitive biomarker assays for myocardial necrosis has prompted an international panel of 52 cardiology experts to readjust the definition of a myocardial infarction (MI). This new definition should aid physicians in accurately diagnosing and treating the various presentations of MI.

The definition incorporates biomarker levels along with other clinical criteria for identifying spontaneous MI, MI secondary to an ischemic imbalance, and MI associated with percutaneous coronary intervention or coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. The “universal” MI definition was presented August 25 at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) 2012 Congress held in Munich, Germany, and compiled by an expert panel representing the ESC, the American College of Cardiology Foundation, the American Heart Association, and the World Heart Federation (Thygesen K et al.
