The prevalence of diabetes is rapidly increasing in the United States and worldwide. Almost 26 million US adults have diabetes,1 79 million Americans aged 20 years or older have prediabetes, and it is projected that by 2050 nearly 50 million Americans will have diabetes.2 More than one-third of US adults are obese, putting them at increased risk of diabetes and other chronic diseases. In response to these public health challenges, Healthy People 2020 goals include reduction of the obesity and diabetes burden in an effort to lower the incidence, complications, and mortality rates in the US population.3
