ABSTRACT

To the Editor:  —In reply to your question concerning the definition of the term "ridit" as used in our recent article on "The Role of Dexpanthenol in Postoperative Ileus," Dr. Irwin Bross and Miss Barbara Ann Cote of our statistical department have provided the following explanation: The ridit for "day of onset of bowel sounds" has the following meaning. The frequency distribution of "day of onset of bowel sounds" in the control (saline placebo) series is taken as the reference or "identified" distribution. In this study the later the onset, the less favorable the situation. The ridit for onset on day 3 (see Fig 4) is roughly 0.75. This numerical value was attained by adding the proportion of control patients with onset on day 1 and day 2 and half of the corresponding patients on day 3 (this is the operational definition of the ridit here).
