—The Senate Democratic Steering Committee voted 11 to 6 against enlarging the Senate Finance Committee to make it easier to pass Administration tax and social security proposals.The expansion was backed by Senate liberals. As a result of the rejection by Senate Democratic leaders, the committee ratio was kept at 11 Democrats to 6 Republicans. The liberals had proposed adding two Democrats.Picked to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Sen. Robert S. Kerr (D., Okla.) was Sen. Abraham Ribicoff (D., Conn.), former HEW Secretary.Senate Republican leader Everett Dirksen of Illinois took the seat on the committee that was vacated by the resignation of Sen.
