Frederick Amasa Coller, MD, chairman emeritus of the Department of Surgery at the University of Michigan Medical School, died Nov 5 at his home in Ann Arbor, Mich, of pulmonary emphysema. Coller, who had headed the Department of Surgery from 1930 to 1957, was 77 years old.
Scientific papers prepared by Coller included about 200 articles concerning many of the early surgical contributions to diseases of the thyroid gland, to regulation of water balance and electrolytes, and to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Following his academic retirement in 1957, Coller continued his active practice of surgery at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital, Ann Arbor, where he had been consultantsurgeon since 1932.
Coller was a member of about 20 surgical societies and had served as president of the American Surgical Association from 1943 to 1944 and of the American College of Surgeons from 1949 to 1950. A commemorative issue of the
