ABSTRACT

In the editorial "Thomas Dover ( 1662-1742 )—Rescuer of Robinson Crusoe," July 20 (189:234), Sir Hans Sloane is identified as the founder of the Royal Society, in the second column, last paragraph, first sentence. Professor Sir Charles Dodds, of the Courtauld Institute of Biochemistry, London, has written that "The Royal Society was incorporated by Royal Charter in the year 1660, and it was in this year, on the 16th of April, that Sir Hans Sloane was born. Sir Hans became President of the Royal Society in 1727, having previously been elected President of the Royal College of Physicians in 1719. He is the only man ever to have held the Presidency of the Royal Society and the Royal College of Physicians and these he held for upwards of 20 years."
