JAMA189:37 (Sept 14) 1964 regrets the omission of the word "direct" from the statement attributed to Robert B. McGandy, MD, Department of Nutrition, Harvard School of Public Health. McGandy's statement should have read, "There is not one shred of direct evidence that reduction in the blood lipids lowers the risk of chronic heart disease." As McGandy pointed out, there is an abundance of indirect evidence, largely epidemiologic, that reduction of blood lipids does lessen the risk of chronic heart disease, and that the main purpose of the present Cooperative National Diet and Heart Study is to test the feasibility of carrying out a definitive study that will provide "direct evidence."
