Infusion of H2O2 Raises O2 Concentration in Tissue

ABSTRACT

A group of Dallas investigators has shown that hydrogen peroxide administered intra-arterially will increase the oxygen concentration of some tissues. They established that radiosensitivity of anoxic neoplastic tissues may be increased by increasing the oxygen concentration in the region of the tumor. This can also be done by using a high pressure oxygen chamber.

J. W. Finney and R. E. Collier, MD, reported to the American Roentgen Ra Society meeting in Minneapolis that when certain radioisotopes were given intra-arterially following intra-arterial infusion of hydrogen peroxide (250 cc of either 0.24 or 0.48 hydrogen peroxide in a mixed saline solution in 5% dextrose [Ionosol-T] is infused for 30 to 45 minutes), the isotope localized preferentially in the area of the malignant tumor in the infused field.
