Albany Medical College has received a federal research grant of $58,206 to pursue studies which indicate that carriers of a rare childhood disease can be detected by an abnormality in the fat composition of their red blood cells. John A. Balint, MD, associate professor of medicine at the college and head of Albany Medical Center's department of gastroenterology will be in charge of the study, which will extend over a four-year period. The National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Blindness, a branch of the USPHS is the granting agency.
The John A. Hartford Foundation of New York has awarded $194,280 to Loma Linda University School of Medicine for experimental research in an effort to develop an effective method of treating human atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis. Directing the three-year investigation is Lester M. Morrison, MD, assistant professor of medicine at the school.
