ABSTRACT

Second Session of Congress Begins.—  Congress came back to work Jan 7 after a short vacation for the election-year session in which the proposed federal medical-hospital program for the aged may play a major role.The House Ways and Means Committee plans to resume hearings on the King-Anderson Bill late in January or early in February for about one week of testimony. Although a majority of the committee appears to be against the controversial proposal, there could be strong pressures in Congress for enactment of the legislation.One of the most important developments in this field last year was the disclosure in testimony before the Ways and Means Committee that Social Security taxes might have to be raised much higher than proposed in the medical-hospital plan in order to keep the Social Security system actuarially sound.Last year was an important one for health legislation.
