ABSTRACT

To the Editor:—  If the use of computers in processing medical data falls heir to the same errors as it has in commercial fields it will, in some instances, be far from an unmixed blessing.Around the first of the year a large concern with whom I have occasion to do business converted to computers. Inadvertently, my name became listed under two different code numbers, and each month I received two bills. In spite of continuous correspondence, not only about the two bills but also concerning numerous errors in items, it took them until today to find the errors and enclose a check for overpayment of my account. Even now I am not sure that all the errors have been corrected.Computers are merely speed mechanisms. They are no better than the individuals who feed the data.
