To the Editor.—Dr Rimm and colleagues1 recently reported an inverse association between a high-folate diet and subsequent risk of CHD among a group of women from the Nurses' Health Study. In one of several subgroup analyses, this association was found to be strongest among those who consumed 15 g or more of alcohol daily; no appreciable protective effect for folate was apparent for nondrinkers. We recently updated the mortality record linkage of the Nutrition Canada survey cohort, which we had previously used to examine serum folate and fatal CHD risk,2 to the end of 1993. We examined the combined effects of average daily alcohol consumption, as measured by a 1-month food frequency questionnaire, and serum folate quartile on fatal CHD risk. As the observed relationship was similar for men and women, we present the combined results.
