To the Editor.—Apoptosis has received widespread attention over the past 5 years because it may play a role in a number of diseases ranging from cancer to stroke. Mr Hetts1 presents a detailed review of apoptosis in autoimmunity, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders and concludes optimistically that knowledge of the intracellular apoptotic pathways may lead to a new armamentarium of therapeutic drugs for age-old diseases. What is lacking from this review is a critical appraisal of the evidence for and clinical relevance of apoptosis in disease.
