In Reply.—We agree with Dr Stotland that what is most important to clinician-educators is "not what promotion committees say, but what they do." However, for the first time, we have documentation of what promotion committees across the United States and Canada say they are doing with respect to decisions about the promotion of clinician-educators. This information should strengthen the ability of clinician-educators to insist that decisions about their promotion and tenure are based on appropriate criteria. Indeed, the response to our survey indicates that the chairs of promotion committees, who know best the process and procedures involved in academic advancement at their own universities, do in fact recognize the importance of clinician-educators and the need to use different criteria for evaluating them.
