The ESC Textbook of Intensive and Acute Cardiac Care

Because cardiovascular diseases are a leading cause of death in the Western world, evidence-based medicine and cardiac care delivery systems have in the past decade become more intricate and complex. A combination of elderly patients and aggressive cardiology practice has increased the use of early interventions and demanding diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, which likewise coincides with the increased incidence of multiorgan failure and cardiac emergencies.

Cardiologists must be trained to deal with future demands for intensive and acute cardiac care (IACC). To this end, the Working Group on Acute Cardiac Care of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) has developed a training program intended to foster state-of-the-art training to improve the treatment of severe cardiac diseases. The curriculum provided in The ESC Textbook of Intensive and Acute Cardiac Care describes the role of cardiologists working in this important new subspecialty.
