In Reply: Drs Ginzburg and Hart suggest that our conclusion should have been expressly limited to the NADA protocol rather than to acupuncture in general. We are not aware of any published study showing that needles inserted into the points we used, unguided by a prior traditional Chinese medicine diagnosis, produces, in effect, a sham treatment. Nor are we aware of any study showing that needling of auricular points based upon a traditional Chinese medicine diagnosis produces a more effective treatment than insertion of points specified by the NADA protocol. A study examining these issues might be of interest, although the results may have limited applicability, considering the wide use of the NADA protocol.
