To the Editor: Dr Blumenthal and colleagues1 report that 32% of graduating anesthesiology residents
felt unprepared to manage chronic pain. The authors used this finding to support
their conclusion "that gaps may still exist in the preparedness of physicians
to manage the full range of patients . . . they may confront as practitioners."
As anesthesiologists and educators, we see this response as appropriate and
as confirmation of exactly the mode of education we now use to teach anesthesiology
