In Reply: We did consider the possibility that,
in reaction to the reminders, resident physicians would first provide care
to the most agreeable patients, leaving a more resistant group of patients
remaining in the later months of the study. To address this, we provided residents
with the ability to exclude any patient for whom the suggested care was not
appropriate. However, few such patients were identified. Second, following
data collection, we conducted additional statistical analyses designed to
ensure an equal balance in patient characteristics and to control for the
more highly resistant patients.
