In Reply: We agree with Dr Rayburn that we
should have been more explicit about diagnostic criteria. Since the Expert
Committee on the Diagnosis and Classification of Diabetes Mellitus did not
recommend using the OGTT for routine clinical use, our assumption was that
the new criteria required only measurement of the FPG concentration for the
diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. The 2-hour FPG concentration on the OGTT was
considered only to judge what the diagnosis would have been if the criteria
in place before the Expert Committee's report had been used.
