To the Editor: Dr Nathan1 highlights the concerns that NIH funding for clinical research is progressively decreasing and that the physicians involved in clinical research are "an ever-dwindling minority." Observations like these have fueled what has been called the "crisis in clinical research."2 However, Nathan1 concluded that clinical research dollars comprised 36% of 1996 NIH funding. They derived this figure from their own review and designation of funded grants in 1996, their own definition of clinical research.
