In Reply: In response to Dr Appleton, the article by Thys-Jacobs et al1 was an important study conducted in a large number of women (466 patients) that suggested the efficacy of calcium supplementation (Tums E-X) in reducing symptoms of negative affect. Further work is needed to determine whether this initially promising result can be replicated in other studies with other patients in whom the diagnosis of premenstrual dysphoric disorder is confirmed by prospective daily ratings. The Clinical Crossroads conference given at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Grand Rounds at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, Mass, on which my article in JAMA was based, was held in May 1998, before the study by Thys-Jacobs et al was published.
