To the Editor: Incredibly,
after the travesties of the AMA's foray into the sale of its logo to
Sunbeam, its bartering support for long-term abortion legislation for
increased Medicare reimbursement, and its torpor in collaborating with
the Health Care Financing Administration to implement the infamous
Evaluation and Management Guidelines, comes the sacking of Dr
Lundberg.1 Statements by Nancy Dickey, MD, president of the
AMA, and Randolph Smoak, Jr, MD, chair of the AMA Board of Trustees,
acknowledge that they approved and concurred in the public drawing and
quartering of Lundberg by the current EVP of 7 months' tenure, who was
not even an AMA member until 5 years ago.2- 4 As the Board
of Trustees circle the wagons around Dr Anderson, they continue to
demonstrate their failure to understand their responsibility in the
immolation of what I have publicly stated is the AMA's "jewel in the
crown," the Journal of the American Medical Association.
