In Reply: Dr Carlston is correct to point out that presenting information about CAM does not constitute blind advocacy. His comments also reinforce our finding that this is a bewilderingly diverse area in medical education that awaits further definition and organization. Although we stated that curriculum material received from 29 schools indicates that most are not teaching "how-to" courses, we could not extrapolate further because detail about course content was beyond the scope of our study. Progress in defining a direction for medical education in CAM is evident, when as he notes, the Society of Family Medicine study group, the National Institutes of Health Office of Alternative Medicine's "Blue Ribbon Panel," and our own study independently arrive at similar recommendations.
