This surgical atlas is an excellent overview of important surgical techniques in pediatric orthopedics. It thoroughly covers 60 operative procedures, bringing some cutting-edge operative treatments to a pediatric atlas for the first time. The editors have assembled a large team of respected authors to provide a broad perspective on these topics.
Each segment follows an exact template: indications, examination/imaging, anatomy, positioning, and the details of the surgery. This comprehensive look at each procedure greatly enhances the value of this book, so it does not merely function as a surgical atlas. In some textbooks, preoperative planning and anatomy are not given enough attention. That is certainly not the case here. The margins of each chapter are filled with clinical “pearls and pitfalls” to keep the surgeon out of trouble. A concise set of references follows each section, with a brief summary that highlights points relevant to the case. A broad spectrum of problems is covered, including complex spine and hand procedures. Michael Millis has been one of the leaders in the field of pelvic osteotomy and hip preservation, and as expected, the section on hip and pelvis procedures is outstanding. Detailed descriptions are provided of surgical dislocation of the hip and of the Bernese periacetabular osteotomy, along with other complex hip procedures. Similarly, Kocher has been at the forefront of pediatric sports medicine, and his section on knee reconstruction is also excellent. This standard is largely present throughout the entire book, despite the large number of authors. The attention to detail is impressive.
